Without reliable storage, your entire workflow collapses, client deliverables are lost, and your reputation is annihilated. But in 2023, that recommendation became a toxic liability. A catastrophic firmware failure wiped out terabytes of data for thousands of professionals worldwide. Theoretical vs. Sustained Write Speeds

SanDisk markets the standard Extreme V2 drive as achieving "up to 1050MB/s" read speeds and "up to 1000MB/s" write speeds via its USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface.

These numbers are theoretical peak bursts, typically measured using synthetic benchmarking tools like CrystalDiskMark or Blackmagic Disk Speed Test with 1GB file sizes. In the real world, when you are dumping 400GB of 4K 10-bit ProRes footage from a CFexpress card, you will never see 1000MB/s.

During our real-world ingest tests, copying a mixed folder of 150GB containing large video files and thousands of small raw photos, the drive burst initially to about 850MB/s. After approximately 30 seconds, the SLC (Single-Level Cell) cache filled up, and the sustained write speed plummeted.

For the remainder of the transfer, the drive settled into a sustained write speed of roughly 350MB/s to 400MB/s. This is the reality of TLC (Triple-Level Cell) NAND flash memory. It relies on a fast SLC cache to buffer data, and once that cache is exhausted, the underlying TLC memory is significantly slower.

If you are a photographer moving 30GB of RAW photos at a time, you will never hit the cache limit, and the drive will feel blazingly fast. If you are a DIT (Digital Imaging Technician) offloading 1TB of RED raw footage on a film set, you will be waiting substantially longer than the marketing materials suggest.

Thermal Throttling: The Silent Enemy

Speed and heat are intrinsically linked in solid-state storage. When a NVMe drive operates at high speeds, it generates a massive amount of heat.

The SanDisk Extreme uses its internal aluminum chassis to dissipate this heat through the silicone shell. During a sustained 500GB write operation, the exterior of the drive becomes noticeably hot to the touch—reaching temperatures in excess of 45°C (113°F).

While the drive is designed to operate safely at these temperatures, the heat triggers thermal throttling. To protect the NAND flash and the controller from melting, the drive's firmware intentionally throttles the transfer speeds when the temperature crosses a specific threshold.

In our testing, after 15 minutes of continuous writing, thermal throttling kicked in, dropping the sustained write speeds down to an agonizing 150MB/s until the drive cooled down. If you live in a hot climate and are offloading footage outdoors in the direct sun, this thermal throttling will occur much faster.

The Cable Management Friction

SanDisk includes a very short (roughly 6-inch) USB-C to USB-C cable in the box, along with a USB-C to USB-A adapter.

The cable is entirely inadequate. It is rigid, inflexible, and far too short for desktop use. If you plug the drive into an iMac or a desktop PC tower, the drive will literally dangle in mid-air, putting physical stress on the USB-C port.

Because the cable is so stiff, any movement of your laptop on a desk will torque the connection. You will inevitably need to spend an additional $15 on a high-quality, 3-foot braided USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 cable from a brand like Anker or Cable Matters. The drive comes pre-loaded with SanDisk Security software, which offers 256-bit AES hardware encryption.

In practice, proprietary manufacturer encryption software is a nightmare. It requires you to install background daemons on your machine, it frequently breaks when Apple or Microsoft updates their operating systems, and it introduces a massive point of failure. Third, Samsung does not have the recent historical baggage of a catastrophic firmware failure wiping out customer data.

The only area where the SanDisk arguably wins is the physical carabiner loop, which the Samsung T7 Shield lacks. If you absolutely must clip your drive to a bag, the SanDisk is your only option. For every other use case, the Samsung is the superior piece of hardware.

The Final Verdict: Who Is This For?

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 2 TB is a fundamentally compromised piece of technology.

It is physically robust, highly portable, and offers excellent burst speeds for small file transfers. If you are a casual user, a student, or a photographer who strictly deals with small batches of RAW files, the drive will perform admirably.

But if you are a professional pushing massive volumes of data, the slow sustained write speeds and aggressive thermal throttling make this drive a frustrating bottleneck. When you combine those performance limitations with the lingering anxiety of the 2023 firmware disaster, it becomes impossible to recommend this drive as your primary production tool.

The market has moved on. Competitors have built faster, cooler, and more reliable drives at the exact same price point. The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD relies on a reputation it built five years ago—a reputation it shattered in 2023, and hardware that is simply outclassed in 2026. If you find it on a massive clearance sale for 50% off, buy it and use it as a secondary delivery drive. But if you are paying full retail price, buy the Samsung T7 Shield instead.
