Here is why the mouse is the enemy of the colorist.

The Mathematical Impossibility of the Mouse

When you manipulate an image, you are rarely just changing one thing.

If a shot is too dark, you might want to lift the Shadows (to see the actor's eyes) while simultaneously lowering the Highlights (so the window behind them doesn't blow out).

If you use a mouse, this is a sequential, mathematical process. You click the Shadow wheel. You drag it up. You let go. You move the mouse. You click the Highlight wheel. You drag it down. You let go. You look at the image. You realize it looks terrible. You start over.

You are doing math. You are not feeling the image.
